Theme 4 People, Social Innovation & Design
Technology is ready. People make the difference.
Arnhem is taking the lead in social innovation within the energy transition. During the AEW European Power Summit, AEW and Creatief Arnhem launche a new Creative x Energy track that places people – rather than technology – at the center of the transition.
The energy transition is not only a technological challenge; it is a social, cultural and systemic transformation. While technological solutions and knowledge are increasingly available, it is social innovation that ultimately determines whether the transition succeeds. However, within this domain, the role of design and creative capacity as a driver of change remains underexplored; while it is precisely this that accelerates transformation.
Design is not just about form or aesthetics. It is a way of thinking and working that connects systems, people and environments. Designers, artists, architects and creative thinkers bring the ability to translate complexity into tangible, human-centered solutions, enabling new forms of collaboration, ownership and imagination.
This Creative x Energy theme positions design power as a crucial accelerator within social innovation. It explores how creativity, imagination and nature can guide the transition toward more inclusive, desirable and regenerative energy systems – systems that people understand, trust and actively want to be part of.
Across three sessions, designers, artists, architects, researchers, policymakers and energy innovators explore how design can reshape the energy transition
Session highlights
Session 1: Power to the People: Who owns the Energy transition?
Creative x Energy – Rethinking power, ownership and collaboration in the energy systems of tomorrow.
Who holds the power in the energy transition, and who should?
As energy systems decentralize and societies move toward renewable energy, new questions emerge about governance, ownership and participation. How can we organize an energy system that is not only efficient and sustainable, but also fair, inclusive and democratic?
This session explores how new forms of multi-actor collaboration are reshaping the energy landscape. Municipalities, grid operators, designers, communities, companies and governments all play a role in building the energy system of the future. But this also requires new roles, new rules and new ways of working together; from process orchestrators and system integrators to community organizers.
Inspired by the Patagonia documentary “We the Power: The Future of Energy is Community-Owned”, we will reflect on how communities across Europe are reclaiming agency in the energy transition. The session will open with a short clip from the film to spark the conversation.
Expect a provocative and forward-looking discussion on power, governance and experimentation. Together we will explore how collaboration, creativity and new governance models can unlock a more equitable, adaptive and people-centered energy system.
Session 2: A Beautiful Energy Future
Creative x Energy – Designing energy systems people trust and feel proud of.
In this session we explore a simple but powerful question: what if energy infrastructure became something communities could recognize, trust and even feel proud of? What if the transition could foster a new sense of energy dignity – a future in which people feel ownership, pride and connection to the systems that power their lives?
The energy transition is not only a technological transformation it is also a cultural and imaginative one. Beyond efficiency and infrastructure, the future energy system must earn trust, meaning and public acceptance.
Designers, architects, energy experts and innovators will explore how imagination, aesthetics and storytelling can make the energy transition more tangible and desirable. From smart grids and new heating systems to digital twins, and home energy management systems, many innovations require people to adopt new technologies, new workflows and new responsibilities.
Together we explore how design can create a new visual language and spatial quality for sustainable infrastructure; helping ensure that the future energy system is not only engineered, but also trusted, embraced and culturally embedded in society.
Session 3: Energy Systems Inspired by Nature
Creative x Energy – Learning from nature to build resilient and decentralized energy systems.
What would it mean to design energy systems the way nature organizes ecosystems: decentralized, adaptive and regenerative? Nature offers powerful lessons in resilience, balance and decentralization. Ecosystems operate through networks, diversity and circular flows – principles that can inspire a new generation of energy systems. In this session we explore how biomimicry and nature-inspired design can shape the future of energy infrastructure.
The session takes a visual and interactive ‘nature principles lab format’ : the moderator introduces three principles from nature – diversity, flow and networks – and each speaker connects their case to how ecosystems inspire resilient and decentralized energy systems.
Designers, engineers, researchers and energy innovators will explore how principles from nature can inform energy networks, spatial planning and infrastructure design. From decentralized systems and circular resource flows to regenerative landscapes and energy-positive environments, nature provides a blueprint for systems that are both efficient and resilient.
By learning to design with nature instead of against it, we can create energy systems that are not only sustainable, but also adaptive, balanced and deeply integrated into the landscapes and communities they serve.
