Thomas Hoppe

Thomas Hoppe is Professor of Sustainability of Rural-Urban Systems in the Department of Technology, Policy and Management (TPS), Section of Governance & Technology for Sustainability (CSTM).’ His research line is on governing complex (multi-actor, multi-sector, multi-level) sustainability transitions in regional settings characterized by both rural and urban contexts, and the interplay between them. Within this line Thomas has a special focus on governance of sustainable energy transitions.

Recent research projects concern the upscaling of community energy collectives, governance and innovation of aqua thermal energy, social dynamics in the energy transition (more specifically regarding energy communities), governance and upscaling of sustainable batteries, regional governance implications of the introduction of small modular reactors, energy regions (RES), and responsible innovation of AI in the energy sector. In the latter case, he works with a so-called ‘E3LSA Lab’ approach, in which legal, ethical, economic, environmental, and social scientific aspects are highlighted in a transdisciplinary project, with the Lab located on the Arnhem Electricity Campus.
