19/5 VPRO Meetup: De Strijd om de Diepzee
We all want to drive an electric car, heat our homes with solar panels, and do our laundry with wind energy. That means we’re ‘doing the right thing.’ Or aren’t we?
On the ocean floor lie cobalt, manganese, and nickel—resources essential for the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. These metals are used in batteries for electric cars and wind turbines, among other applications. Companies from countries including the Netherlands, Norway, and Canada are leading the global race to extract these deep-sea metals, aiming to reduce dependence on suppliers like China, which currently dominates the supply of these critical materials.
However, the battle isn’t just geopolitical—environmental organizations warn of potentially irreversible ecological damage. Does the energy transition stand in direct conflict with nature conservation?
As part of Arnhem Electricity Week, we will explore the challenges and dilemmas surrounding the rise of deep-sea mining.
