Opening of the National Expertise Centre for Grid Congestion: Joining Forces to Accelerate Tackling Grid Congestion: Letter of Intent for the Establishment of the National Expertise Centre for Grid Congestion

On Wednesday, May 21, 2025, Alliander, TenneT, the Province of Gelderland, Oost NL, a representative of all regions of VNO-NCW, HAN University of Applied Sciences, and Connectr – Energy Innovation will sign a letter of intent to establish the National Expertise Centre for Grid Congestion. The aim of this future centre is to accelerate and scale up solutions to grid congestion together.

Grid congestion-the overloading of the electricity grid-is one of the biggest challenges within the energy transition. Daily news reports about delayed construction projects and businesses unable to expand underscore the urgency of the problem. Grid congestion not only hampers the sustainability efforts of the Netherlands but also has direct social and economic consequences: entrepreneurs face limitations, investments are postponed, and sustainable initiatives are held back. According to recent research, grid congestion costs society up to 40 billion euros annually due to missed investments, halted production, and lost opportunities for sustainability. For businesses, this means not only lost revenue but also missed market share and employment opportunities.

Bringing Together Entrepreneurs, Policymakers, and Experts

The idea behind the National Expertise Centre for Grid Congestion is to provide companies and governments with a national platform where existing and new smart solutions, technologies, and methods for grid congestion can be tested, scaled up, and made applicable. Examples include the use of batteries, energy hubs on business parks, or energy management systems that enable companies to grow and become more sustainable despite a congested grid. In this way, the Expertise Centre actively supports the realization of new connections or the expansion of capacity, ensuring that economic development and the energy transition do not come to a standstill.

Letter of Intent

During Arnhem Electricity Week, the initiators signed the letter of intent to establish this national centre. The coming six months will be used to further develop the centre and reach a definitive partnership.

National Grid Congestion Solution Award

A highlight of the event during Arnhem Electricity Week is the presentation of the very first National Grid Congestion Solution Award. The three finalists will present their proven and scalable solutions to the public and the jury.

The finalists are:

  • Powercrumbs & Bredenoord – Powerbox
  • Kersten Techniek – Smart Beach Grid Scheveningen
  • QuinteQ Energy – THOR

The winner will receive national recognition and extensive visibility through media channels and partners such as TenneT, Alliander, HAN University of Applied Sciences, VNO-NCW, Oost NL, and Connectr – Energy Innovation.
